“When modern day mass tourism doesn’t allow you to live in your city”
For a country like Greece and especially a city like Athens mass tourism
is sold as a blessing as it is linked with increased profit. At the same
time though it is the root of a number of phenomena that put a huge
burdain on locals and their daily lives: Airbnb and the rising demand
for accomondation leads to increased rents and precarity for the
locals. Public spaces are undermined and overcrowded while tourist
facility constructions create a sterile environment in the neighbours,
to be anjoyed by visitors, cut off from the people and their needs.
Eventually whatever “fianancial growth” has been achieved only
translates to increased cost of life disproportionate to average incomes
that roughly stay the same.
We are chosing this time to show a series of documentaries in our
neighbourhood to point out this issue that is affecting us directly and
to emphasize the fact that, irrelevant to your location on the globe,
the tourist industry expands and exploits following the same partners
and leading to the same devastating results. After the city of Venice we
take a closer look at the Balearic Islands (mostly Ibiza and Mallorca).
We witness how the radical increase of tourism turns the islands into
“amusement parks” for tourists. We watch as the myth of tourism
“feeding” the local economy is questioned and its place is taken over by
concerns that include the state of the overused beaches and the housing
problems that occur. We will see a series of interviews with individuals
connected to the tourist industry, academics, ecologists as well as
anonymous residents of Mallorca. The film features images of Mallorca
that tourist guides won’t show.

The imposition and escalation of restrictions and prohibitions from the
beginning of the pandemic, their apparent use of the above by the state and
the surveillance of every aspect of our lives, intensify social war and
oppression aimed at building a dystopia dominated by self-inclusion and
individualism. Fostering and building relationships of solidarity and mutual
care, as well as any attempt to claim public space, are acts of collective
resistance to the dystopia and regime of social isolation.
With the above in mind we are participating in the march against the
prohibitions and the further devaluation of our lives called by squatters,
anarchist groups and comrades from the neighborhoods of Athens’s center.
The call to march:
https://athens.indymedia.org/event/84521/
The weekend 23-24 May, various groups and individuals hanged a series of banners as a sign of solidarity with migrants targeted by the anti-immigration policies of the Greek state. These banners were hung in different neighborhoods of Athens, including Patisia, Kypseli, Petralona, Gyzi, Philadelphia, Chalandri, Agia Paraskevi, Galatsi, Agios Eleftherios, Agios Nikolaos.
This coordinated action is a minimum response to the intensification of the anti-immigration war that is taking place in every part of the Greek territory. The pushbacks in the Aegean and Evros, the evictions of the migrant squats in the center of Athens, the quarantine-incarceration of thousands in camps under the pretext of the coronavirus, the defamation of migrant women in Kranidi, the police violence against any non-white person in the streets are daily manifestations of state-organized and socially diffused racism.
Μigrants do not remain inactive in face of this reality. They break the monologue of state violence and articulate their own resistances and refusals. The hunger strikes in the detention centers of Paranesti, Moria, Corinth, Glyfada and Peristeri police stations, the uprisings in Chios and Samos, the daily migrant marches in Lesvos, the denunciations from the prisoners in Petrou Ralli, the self-organization of migrants against evictions are moments of the struggle against exploitation, invisibility and death.
Nothing less than our undivided solidarity with immigrants and their struggles for life, freedom and dignity.
IMMEDIATE RELEASE OF ALL MIGRANTS.
AGAINST ALL CAMPS, CLOSED OR OPEN.
LOCALS AND MIGRANTS, TOGETHER WE LIVE.
LEAVE NOONE BEHIND.

From Marousi to Koukaki and from Exarchia to Kipseli and Patissia, the seeds of another world have already been sowed. A world against misery, exploitation, wage slavery, property and selfishness. And these seeds grow with blood instead of water, and with violence instead of sun. The more blood is spilled, the more fed are the seeds, and the more violence is used against the bodies of the damned ones, the more grown are the flowers of resistance. Every closed squat, every manhunt and beating against our bodies, makes us stubborn and more powerful.
On 23/12 we hung a banner at the basketball courts of Fitefti, in Kato Patissia neighbourhood, writing: “Hands off of squats & migrants – Antiauthoritarian, solidarian & self organized communities in every neighbourhood”.

When they shout for clean neighborhoods,
it smells of blood
★
The blood of the migrants that are exiled to the concentration camps after the eviction of the squats where they used to live and stand with as much dignity as possible.
The blood at the borders, the seas, the working places, the cells and the police stations, the blood of the damned that were trying to find a solution for the dead ends of their daily survival.
The blood that paints red the streets and the pavements, the same
blood that paints red the cop’s glob or the fascist’s knife, the same blood that arms the automatic guns of the full-armored cops who secure the dominant order with their patrol-vans, or the carbine of the bosses and the pacified owners who would kill in order to defend their sacred property.
The blood that quietly soaks the red carpet that is rolled out for investors and real-estate owners, for the sake of development, progress, tourism, the nation: for the sake of capitalism.
On the pretext of the state’s war against drugs, against “lawlessness”, the war for the “cleaning of the neighborhoods by the outcasts”, it emerges the profile of the superfluous ones: the “dust” and the “garbage”, as was fluently expressed by the syndicalist cop Balaskas.
The aspired normality is raised exactly over the existence of these exclusions. The streets that are walked by the “virtuous ones” in the world of the state and economic domination, are built exactly over the dead bodies of the superfluous ones.
In this war, the “garbage” take stand: the stand of solidarity among them, of the effort to co-organize and take back the control of their own lives as much as possible.
Parts of this effort are the squats, the demonstrations, the gatherings, the solid support of each other, the relationships that we build on the base of equality, honesty, empathy and responsibility.
It’s our world against theirs
and we are two worlds in conflict

At the dawn of 27th of October, a few hours before the traditional national anniversary (of 28th of October), and having spotted fascist presence on several walls of Kato Patisia, we went out and wrote antinational slogans, we hung banner and threw some flyers at the neighborhood. And because the national unity leads to many dead bodies, we choose to stand against every form of this hilarious imaginary construction.
As long as there are concentration camps and prisons, fascism and racism, “superior” and “inferior” ones, oppression and misery, there will be a constant, bitter and painful reminder that we are two different worlds, and we are two worlds in conflict.
No border, no nation
We are traitors of the national unity

THIS IS WHERE WE LIVE AND WORK, COMMON STRUGGLES FOR AFFORDABLE HOUSING!
The city is changing. The invasion of tourism industry, Airbnb, real estate agencies, the state’s policy and their allies, are turning this city into a theme park; into a constant investing opportunity within which we are either customers or low payed workers. The base salary remains stuck at 500 euros, but the house owners, the Greeks petit-bourgeois, decided that it’s more than sufficient for them to collect higher rents. And we should get accustomed to paying more and to live under worse conditions. To inhabit and work into neighborhoods with no migrants and to anyone else who does not fit for them. We should struggle to keep our neighborhoods multi-ethnic, against racism and state suppression. To keep our neighborhoods alive, against landlords and bosses!

Assembly against the extortion of rent
On Saturday 8th of June, we made a massive postering at neighborhoods of Athens center, in the frame of the campaign for the pointing out of Petrou Ralli as a center of taking decisions about the migrants. Specifically, we started from Acharnon street and through a big route we finished at Kypseli area. During the route, we wrote slogans on the walls, gave texts and threw flyers. We also made some appropriate decoration on several spots of the route. The posters were in four languages.
